Pathologist and Senior Scientist Workforce Modelling 2016 to 2030

Nature and scope

The RCPA commissioned KBC Australia to undertake workforce modelling for each discipline of Pathologists and Senior Scientists for Australia and New Zealand. The study updated and expanded on previous modelling of the pathologist workforce undertaken by Health Workforce Australia (HWA) in 2012.

This study involved: detailed projection modelling by discipline; reviews the data on trainees within Australia, profiles historic trends in the growth of trainees determining the extent to which trainees are needed as supply for the Australian or New Zealand workforce; workforce issues for Senior Scientists who are members of the College; and developing a strategy for undertaking workforce modelling for this group of members for both Australia and New Zealand.

Methodology

  • Environmental scan
  • Technical paper
  • Methodology paper describing the quantitative analysis to support the modelling
  • Results of the projection modelling including sensitivity modelling
  • Qualitative data collection
  • Final Report on the findings

Outcomes

Findings from the modelling were used to inform training planning for the RCPA.
